My New Toy

So I've been a bit too busy to update anything on here lately mainly due to work (ya ya I know) and a little trip to Sicily then Tunisia which I came back from not too long ago. I snapped tons of photos while I was there but in some places like North Africa, I was a little reluctant to shoot because my camera and lenses were so huge. I was a little disappointed at times when I saw great photo ops and couldn't shoot, but I figured it was safer than getting robbed or having my gear stolen.

When I got home I started looking for another camera with same quality but a lot smaller. It was between the Lumix GF1, the Olympus EP-1 or the Leica X1 which, when I checked, was over 2 thousand dollars (and was totally not what I was looking to spend right now).... so it was down to the two. After a little research and reading the review here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/PanasonicGF1/ both had pretty much the same features. In the end I opted for the Lumix because I'm able to throw on an adapter and use the Olympus lenses... and because it just felt nicer in my hand.

I picked it up yesterday along with this nice little 20mm pancake lens... pretty easy to figure out the controls too and I'm now starting to see why people are in love with these Micro 4/3's.... Already thinking about my next trip, wherever that is. All I can say is that this little guys coming with me everywhere from now on.

2010 Olympics

So the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics started this weekend... I watched the opening ceremonies and thought some aspects of it were great, like the video the projection (especially when the Orcas swam though the stadium) and some of it was boring (like when Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado's voices clashed in what I thought was a pretty lame performance).

Anyways, all this brought me back to when I was in second year college at George Brown for Graphic Design. Ten years ago one of my final class projects was to design components for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and I thought to myself... wow, in ten years Ill be thirty, hmm... I wonder if maybe I'll be working at a big design firm as an Art Director on a G5... and maybe Photoshop 8 might be out by then too (remember, this was back when the G4's were just introduced and came with a wopping 20 Gig hard drive and we were using Photoshop 6 back then I think)... or maybe Ill be married by then, have kids, and have a totally different career...

Well Im still in the creative industry... no kids yet and we're way past the G5 and Photoshop 8. But the opening ceremonies did make me wonder where my class project went.

I did a bit of searching around and found the cd it was on (thank God it wasn't still on Zip disc or else I'd be in trouble). I opened the files and compared them to whats been designed already and thought that I did a pretty okay job... I'm sure that if I designed it now I'd come up with something better.

Now I'm curious to see if I can get some of my classmates to find and post their projects if they still have them too. I think it would be interesting to see what we thought it would look like ten years into the future.

Olympic Torch Comes to Toronto!

It's been busy as of late especially with the holidays less than a week away, but when I heard the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch was coming through Toronto I knew I had to get some shots and post them.

I didn't know if I'd be able to get close enough to actually see it while I was there, but waiting in the cold for 2 hours paid off as they passed off the torch right in from of me.

My mission now - get my hands on a media pass for the games in February... or come up with the $ 2,450 for a ticket to the opening ceremony.

Today was a hot one, 30Cº and the forecast called for rain but I got lucky with Marco and Sabrina at the farm. No rain and the pics turned out great.

So, after the lightning that hit my neighbors house killed the power and got me off the computer, I decided it would be cool to see of I could get some shots of the storm. I had a great view of the sky from my kitchen balcony facing Lake Ontario and and started shooting. Heres some of my favs. Enjoy!
